Stupid rumor of the day: Brad Pitt as John Marston in Red Dead Redemption movie

I absolutely can’t stand when gossip blogs make up CLEARLY false rumors to boost page views, giving us such great stories as OMFG EDDIE MURPHY IS THE RIDDLER or ROFL MILEY CYRUS IS BATGIRL. But this one hits a little closer to home, and is a plausible thought, at the very least.

Some site that I’m not going to reward with a link or credit is claiming that Brad Pitt is set to star as John Marston in a film adaptation of Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption old west GTA-style game. I don’t believe this is in any way remotely true, but I just wanted to write this up to see what you all thought about the prospect of a film version of that game. It seems every video game is turning into a movie nowadays, but some obviously make better selections than others.

Red Dead Redemption was one of the most cinematic games I think I’ve ever played. The voice acting was incredible, and I could easily see this being a legitimate feature film, something the video game industry is still looking for all these years.

The problem is however, the overall plot of the game, whose basic premise of "former outlaw blackmailed by government to kill old outlaw buddies" is good, but when I found myself leading a coup on the government of Mexico, or conversely torching a settlement of rebels, I often wondered "how the hell did I end up here?" Everyone you meet will claim to help you on your quest, but only if you murder about 200 different people for them first.

That being said, if the plot was streamlined a bit, and only the most memorable and pivotal moments in the game were included, I think this could be a pretty great feature. And if Pitt decided to make this lie into truth, I wouldn’t be opposed to that either.

What do you think? Should Red Dead be a film, or is it practically enough of a movie as is? And who would be your ideal John Marston?
