Superhero rumor of the day: will a marvelous female superhero be joining the team in Avengers 2?

Ms. Marvel shadowy artToday’s superhero rumor comes from The Daily Mail, a source which only has slightly more credibility than than the dreams of an online horoscope writer.  That being said it’s always better to err on the side of caution, especially when the news is this good and about a movie as big as THE AVENGERS 2.  So here goes:

Word comes that “British actresses Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are head-to-head in a race for the most sought-after new female role in Hollywood. Emily, star of The  Young Victoria, and Ruth, from TV’s Luther, are both hotly tipped to play superhero Ms Marvel in Avengers 2, the sequel to Avengers Assemble.”  Blunt was in the running at one time for the role of Peggy Carter in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, but so far as I understand she turned it down – things worked out fine as Haley Atwell was fantastic in the role, and if this new rumor is indeed the truth then things will have worked out all the better as it’s about time Emily Blunt had a full-on hero all to herself.

The character of Ms. Marvel (aka Carol Danvers) has a whole host of impressive superpowers, many of which are actually related to being caught in the blast radius of a Kree device.  Could this also in turns hint at a direction that THE AVENGERS 2 will take in terms of story? I imagine it can’t be easy to craft a threat big enough to unite a team like THE AVENGERS, and the Kree/Skrull storyline was already havily favored for the team’s first go ’round.   Fortunately/Unfortunately it’ll no doubt be many moons yet before we hear about the true direction of the sequel, so in the meantime, here’s Ms. Marvel’s Wikipedia page – feel free to dream away what might be, and let us know below which actress you’d go for should this race be real.

I just hope that it is real, regardless of which actress then gets the part – we definitely need more female superheroes starkly present in the public consciousness.
