This year we get the conclusion to the Skywalker Saga with STAR WARS: EPISODE IX and leading into 2020 the new series THE MANDALORIAN will be gracing the streaming service Disney+. Spearheaded by Jon Favreau the series will feature plenty of big names directing episodes, including Dave Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow, Rick Famuyiwa, and Taika Waititi. The latter often puts himself into his own movies – most recently lending his voice to Korg in Marvel’s THOR: RAGNAROK – and it looks like he will keep the trend going by having a role in MANDALORIAN as the droid IG-88.

Favreau took to Instagram to share a photo from a recording booth for the series, with Waititi lending his voice to the proceedings an image of the bounty hunter droid IG-88 on the screen (and an Iron Man-meets-Boba Fett helmet between them). IG-88 was one of the several bounty hunters hired by Darth Vader to hunt down the Millennium Falcon, and it turns out the silent droid may be capable of rattling off a few quirky witticisms.

There’s no telling if the droid will have a big place in the series or not, but my money is on the chances this is just for a small appearance that worked perfectly for Waititi’s skillset. The mixture of his voice with the intimidating droid look will make for a fun visual that could add some color to the show, which may already be pretty colorful if Waititi is directing an episode.  Along with Waititi in the voice role, the show stars Pedro Pascal, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog, and Nick Nolte.

Here's the synopsis:

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.
