Terrence Malick’s IMAX movie Voyage of Time may hit theaters in 2014

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

From 1973 to 2005, Terrence Malick directed 4 films. Since the release of THE TREE OF LIFE in 2011, Malick has completed TO THE WONDER as well as filmed two back to back movies: KNIGHT OF CUPS with Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling as well as an untitled musical film starring that same cast. While neither of those films has a potential release date, there is news on yet another new Malick film that may hit theaters as early as next year.

According to The Film Stage, Malick’s IMAX movie VOYAGE OF TIME is aiming for a 2014 release with a potential distributor already lined up. Here is a brief summary of what VOYAGE OF TIME will be:

Featuring narration from Brad Pitt and Emma Thompson, it is reported the film is “aesthetically unique and scientifically accurate” and will chronicle “the whole of time, from the birth of the universe to its final collapse.” It will follow “the first signs of life, bacteria, cellular pioneers, first love, consciousness, the ascent of humanity, life and death and the end of the universe.”

Many claim that people who like Terrence Malick movies do so just so they seem informed as compared to other film fans. I have enjoyed everything from BADLANDS to THE NEW WORLD. I loved THE TREE OF LIFE and I am looking forward to checking out TO THE WONDER. Malick is an immensely talented filmmaker and I found the lyrical nature of THE TREE OF LIFE to be the best part. If VOYAGE OF TIME is just a non-narrative film in the vein of BARAKA or KOYANISQUATSI, I would definitely be interested in it.

There is also word that Malick is working on a director’s cut of THE TREE OF LIFE. Whether it will get a theatrical run or just a special edition on Blu-ray remains to be seen. There have been rumors of a 6 hour cut of THE TREE OF LIFE, so it remains to be seen if this new version he is working on will run that long.

TO THE WONDER is now playing in theaters in limited release.
