The Beastmaster (1982): Fantasizing About Fantasy Films

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Welcome back to Fantasizing About Fantasy Films! Written and narrated by Jessica Dwyer, in this very special episode we look back at an eighties cult classic, The Beastmaster, starring Marc Singer and the late Tanya Roberts. Directed by Don Coscarelli, Singer stars as Dar, the titular Beastmaster, who, like Doctor Doolittle, can talk to the animals, but it's way, way cooler here.

A box-office disappointment upon its release, The Beastmaster found new life on cable TV, with HBO being dubbed "hey, Beastmaster's on" and TBS "the Beastmaster station" given how heavily this movie found itself in rotation. It's a super fun slice of eighties fantasy. Jessica's cooked up something extra special for this episode, nabbing an on-camera interview with The Beastmaster himself, Marc Singer, who talks about shooting the film with his animal co-stars, and remembers the late, great Tanya Roberts.
