The Croods keep crooding in first!

After lurching back to the top spot last weekend, the animated sequel THE CROODS: A NEW AGE maintained its box office leadership again with an estimated $1.7 million.

The PG-rated DreamWorks movie has spent a total of five weekends in first place, but relinquished the position for two full months before recently surging ahead of the competition again.

The Universal release, which first arrived in theaters for Thanksgiving weekend, now has a domestic total of $50.8 million (the second-best pandemic performance in North America behind the $57.9 million finish of Christopher Nolan's time-tripping epic TENET). The $65 million family feature has a worldwide total of $154 million.

The R-rated crime thriller THE LITTLE THINGS was in second place with $1.2 million over its fourth weekend on screens. The $30 million Warner Bros. release (still on their HBO Max streaming service until next weekend) has a domestic total of $11.7 million and nearly $20 million worldwide.

In third place was the R-rated historical drama JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH with $905,000, dropping by 55% from its opening last weekend (when it also premiered on HBO Max). The $26 million biopic of Black Panther chairman Fred Hampton has a ten-day domestic total of $3.3 million.

The PG-13 superhero sequel WONDER WOMAN 1984 was in fourth place with $805,000 on its ninth weekend in theaters, bringing the Patty Jenkins-directed follow-up to a domestic total of $42.7 million and $159.5 million worldwide (on a reported $200 million cost).

In fifth place was the Liam Neeson action-thriller THE MARKSMAN with $775,000. After six weekends, the PG-13 Open Road release has a domestic total of $11.4 million and $14.8 million worldwide, on a $23 million budget.

The PG-13 action movie MONSTER HUNTER was in sixth place with $510,000, giving director Paul W.S. Anderson's latest videogame adaptation a domestic total of $13.4 million on its tenth weekend in release. (The $60 million Milla Jovovich movie also became available on VOD last week, ahead of its Blu-ray release on March 2.)

In seventh place, the acclaimed drama NOMADLAND from director Chloe Zhao (of Marvel's upcoming ETERNALS) was released onto 1100 screens for an estimated $503,000 over the weekend.

Based on a true story, the R-rated movie distributed by (now Disney-owned) Searchlight stars Oscar-winner Frances McDormand as a woman who loses her job and takes to life on the road with fellow nomads.

Critics have showered the itinerant award contender with praise, giving it an average of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 94 on Metacritic. Travel on over to the JoBlo review HERE.

The PG-13 drama LAND was in eighth place with $500,000 on its second weekend. Star Robin Wright's directing debut has a ten-day domestic total of $1.62 million.

Wrapping up the list for the week was the Tom Hanks Western NEWS OF THE WORLD and (yet again!) the Robert De Niro comedy THE WAR WITH GRANDPA, now on its 20th weekend in the Top 10.

And while it was a Christmas Day present for subscribers of the Disney+ streaming platform, the PG-rated Pixar movie SOUL has now collected more than $100 million worldwide from international audiences.

Next weekend finds the cartoon cat and mouse still engaged in their eternal conflict as Warner Bros.' TOM & JERRY gets a simultaneous wide theatrical/HBO Max release, while Tom Holland reunites with his AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR directors the Russo brothers for the drama CHERRY in limited release.
