The Europa Report starring District 9's Sharlto Copley picked up by Magnet Releasing

Back in November we brought you a teaser for THE EUROPA REPORT, a science fiction film with Sharlto Copley and directed by Sebastiàn Cordero. Things have been quiet since then, but we have news now that Magnet Releasing (a genre arm of Magnolia Films) has picked up distributing rights to the movie.

Aintitcool has the press release:

"A unique blend of documentary, alternative history and science fiction thriller, EUROPA REPORT follows a contemporary mission to Jupiter's moon Europa, to investigate the possible existance of alien life within our solar system. Developed in close collaboration with NASA, JPL, SpaceX and other leaders in the scientific community, the film imagines the next step in manned space exploration and is based on recent scientific discoveries and theories."

"EUROPA REPORT is an exceptionally smart, thrilling film that will be a revelation for space enthusiasts and science fiction fans alike," said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. "Its nuanced attention to scientific details lends it an exciting quality that elevates it above the usual genre fare."

I love smart, gorgeously shot science fiction films that tap into humanity's fears and questions about space. That doesn't mean you just toss some extra scientific jargon into the script and hire a top level cinematographer though. If you're going to raise people's hopes of getting a truly epic and realistic science fiction film, you have to deliver. And it's hard as hell...just ask PROMETHEUS and SUNSHINE.

THE EUROPA REPORT is looking to have a VOD launch later this year before it hits theaters in a limited release.
