The Invisible Man appears out of nowhere with $1.65M on Thursday night

After garnering an impressive amount of stellar reviews from entertainment outlets all across the net, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions' THE INVISIBLE MAN has banked $1.65 million in Thursday preview tickets sales across 2,850 theater locations.

While that amount might appear modest when compared to other modern day blockbusters at first, it's important to remember that the production budget for director Leigh Whannell's latest feature was a mere $7 million. In other words, THE INVISIBLE MAN is already showing significant promise at the box office, and that's after just one evening of the tension-filled fright fest's limited release.

As the film stalks its weekend opening, Universal plans to expand the film onto 3,610 screens. With that amount of exposure, Universal anticipates a $20+ million domestic return, with analysts predicting numbers closer to $30 million.

The official synopsis for THE INVISIBLE MAN:

What you can’t see can hurt you. Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss (Us, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale) stars in a terrifying modern tale of obsession inspired by Universal’s classic monster character.

Trapped in a violent, controlling relationship with a wealthy and brilliant scientist, Cecilia Kass (Moss) escapes in the dead of night and disappears into hiding, aided by her sister (Harriet Dyer, NBC’s The InBetween), their childhood friend (Aldis Hodge, Straight Outta Compton) and his teenage daughter (Storm Reid, HBO’s Euphoria).

But when Cecilia’s abusive ex (Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House) commits suicide and leaves her a generous portion of his vast fortune, Cecilia suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of eerie coincidences turns lethal, threatening the lives of those she loves, Cecilia’s sanity begins to unravel as she desperately tries to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.

Adding to THE INVISIBLE MAN's ever-growing list of accolades is a 92% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an Audience Score of 91% based on 243 verified reviews. THE INVISIBLE MAN is the newest addition to Universal's rebooted monster mash, which the studio had launched in 2017 with the Tom Cruise-led THE MUMMY. While THE MUMMY failed to impress critics and audience members alike — banking just $80.2 million at the domestic box office — it looks as if THE INVISIBLE MAN could restore faith in Universal's monster movie initiative.
