The Martian author Andy Weir teams up with Lord and Miller for new project

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have certainly experienced their share of ups and downs in the past few years. The directing duo went from being kicked off SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY mere weeks before the film finished wrapping, to producing arguably the best Spider-Man movie to date with SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE. Most recently Lord and Miller signed a multi-million dollar first look deal at Universal Pictures and now it appears as if the directing tag-team has their first project lined up.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are developing an original science fiction film with author Andy Weir. Weir is probably best known for penning 2011's The Martian which was made into an Oscar nominated film of the same name in 2015 starring Matt Damon. Universal acquired the rights to the idea and the search for a screenwriter has begun. Little is known about the plot at this time other than it being "another problem-solving science fiction adventure." So essentially THE MARTIAN 2.0? To quote Jason Momoa in AQUAMAN, "I can dig it."

Incidentally, this isn't the only project Lord and Miller are currently partnering with Weir on. The dynamic directors are also developing a film based on Andy Weir's 2017 lunar thriller Artemis. There's been little movement on the project since Geneva Robertson-Dworet was hired to write the screenplay in July of last year however. As someone who has read the novel, I really hope that project kicks off soon. It's almost as good as The Martian and I'd love to see who they cast in the role of Jazz.

Aside for ARTEMIS, Lord and Miller are also developing THE BILLION BRICK RACE and THE LAST HUMAN. Meanwhile Weir is currently working on a new novel.

What say you guys? Are you excited for this partnership between Lord, Miller, and Weir? Did you like THE MARTIAN? Sound off in the comments below!
