The New Mutants director says a new trailer will arrive in January

After being banished to the shadows for upward of two years, Fox's dark and horror-tinged superhero project, THE NEW MUTANTS, is getting a brand-new trailer come January of next year.

Directed by Josh Boone (THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, THE STAND), the X-Men spinoff has been confined to a Limbo-like state thanks in part to the Fox-Disney merger as well as executives being at odds with regard to the project's overall vision and presentation. For a time, the film had been battling rumors left and right, which included whispers of extensive reshoots in addition to the film being pushed onto Hulu (or another viable streaming service). Once the Fox-Disney merger was all wrapped up, Disney had announced that THE NEW MUTANTS would arrive in theaters on April 3, 2020. However, despite the official word from Disney, scorned fans of The New Mutants property have very much adapted an "I'll believe it when I see it" attitude about the film. To be perfectly honest, I don't blame them, as for many months it had seemed as it the project would be scrapped entirely, let alone be getting a wide release in theaters.

Word of a new trailer coming down the pike recently arrived via the New Mutants Updates Instagram account, after fans had incessantly asked "Where's the trailer?" Boone himself eventually responded by saying "Soooooon. January" The exchange was then reposted to Twitter:

In addition to Boone's trailer tease, The New Mutants illustrator Bill Sienkiewicz recently appeared on the Fatman on Batman podcast with Kevin Smith and confirmed that Boone had sent him a new, work-in-progress trailer for the upcoming film:

“I don’t know if I’m even allowed to mention any of this, but I will say that The New Mutants film, if you’ve heard anything about it the last couple years… two days ago, I heard from Josh Boone, the director. And he sent me a new trailer. They’ve been working on it, and it is phenomenal. I got chills. It looks like, because of the whole Disney-Fox merger, takeover, whatever… it’s got the blessings of Marvel. And it feels more Marvel in terms of what they’re doing, but also the horror elements of the film are in place.”

Directed and co-written by Boone with Knate Lee, THE NEW MUTANTS stars Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa a.k.a Sunspot; Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar; Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes; Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin a.k.a. Magik; Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie, a.k.a. Cannonball; and Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a. Wolfsbane.

For better or worse, THE NEW MUTANTS are poised to arrive in theaters on April 3, 2020.
