The trailer for Queen of the Earth would feel at home in front of Grindhouse

Catherine (Elisabeth Moss) has entered a particularly dark period in her life. Looking to recuperate, Catherine heads out to her best friend Virginia's (Katherine Waterston) lake house for some much needed relaxation. A bracing, eerie look at the deep bonds of friendship and the horrific effects of such bonds being frayed, QUEEN OF EARTH looks to be a thrilling examination of a deeply complex relationship between two miserable women. The trailer, on the other hand, falls into the shallow end of the unintentional comedy pool. Check it out!

They're obviously going the '70s exploitation route with this trailer, and frankly, it doesn't work at all for me. It feels cheap, no thanks to the low-budget look of the movie. Elisabeth Moss is a great character actress, so I would have appreciated a minimalist approach. On the flip side, I'd say the poster hits all the right notes. We'll see if this flick gets a wide release after it's New York premier later this year.

QUEEN OF EARTH opens in New York on August 26, 2015.
