The Walking Dead star Scott Wilson passes away at age 76

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Scott Wilson, who starred in AMC’s hit show THE WALKING DEAD as Hershel Greene, passed away on Saturday at the age of 76.

Wilson’s representative, Dominic Mancini, tells TMZ that the beloved actor died due to complications from leukemia. Mancini says Wilson was “a national treasure, a calm voice, and a gentle spirit to everyone who came in contact with him”.  Wilson passed away peacefully at his home in LA.

Although Wilson made a shocking departure from THE WALKING DEAD in 2014, his character is said to make an appearance in the upcoming ninth season, which airs tonight on AMC. His scenes were filmed weeks prior, so fans will have a chance to say a proper goodbye to the iconic actor.

AMC has released the following statement: “Scott will always be remembered as a great actor and we all feel fortunate to have known him as an even better person. The character he embodied on THE WALKING DEAD, Hershel, lived at the emotional core of the show. Like Scott in our lives, Hershel was a character whose actions continue to inform our character’s choices to this day. Our hearts go out to his wife, his family, friends and to the millions of fans who loved him. Scott will be missed.”

Aside from his character on THE WALKING DEAD, Wilson was known for his roles in THE GREAT GATSBY (1974), IN COLD BLOOD, THE NINTH CONFIGURATION, and IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT. Genre fans will recognize him from BEHIND THE MASK, EXORCIST III, and Bong Joon-ho’s THE HOST.

Rest easy.
