United We Fall canceled after only one season at ABC

ABC has decided to not move forward with a second season of its family comedy, United We Fall. The series, which debuted July 15, aired its finale on August 26.

The decision to not renew the comedy series isn't all that surprising. United We Fall was a holdover from the 2019-20 season and it was given a summer burn-off to fulfill its initial order. Despite being dumped during the summer, the show did put up respectable numbers across its eight-episode run. A lot of the problem is that Sony TV is getting out of the network comedy business because they feel the model has become outdated.

United We Fall, starring Will Sasso and Christina Vidal-Mitchell, follows the trials and tribulations of Jo and Bill (Vidal-Mitchell and Sasso), parents of two young kids, as they try to make it day to day as a functioning family. Bill’s very judgmental live-in mother (Jane Curtin) and Jo’s large Latinx Catholic family never hesitate to let the couple know they’re seemingly screwing up, but Bill and Jo always have each other’s backs and stand united against everyone: other parents, teachers, doctors, specialists, coaches, co-workers and especially their kids. The series also stars Guillermo Diaz and Ella Grace Helton.

I agree that the network sitcom model is becoming outdated and it's simply not as fresh anymore. United We Fall certainly was a victim of that and I suspect that we won't be seeing a lot of traditional sitcoms popping up on network TV anytime soon. Were YOU watching United We Fall?
