It's been some time since we've heard about Mel Gibson's next directorial project, HACKSAW RIDGE, so allow me to bring you up to speed. RIDGE will tell the story of the first Conscientious Objector in American history, Desmond Doss, who was awarded the Medal of Honor. As of now, Doss is set to be played by ex-Spider-man, Andrew Garfield. Now it looks like we can add the Uncle Ben to his Peter Parker (but not really), Vince Vaughn.

They synopsis according to Deadline:

The story unfolds during WWII and follows the soldiers of the 307th Infantry, 77th Army Division, 1st Battalion, Company B as they train for battle. The movie will begin at a base camp in South Carolina and follow the recruits as they learn basic wartime survival skills before being deployed to Japan where they come face to face with the action at the Battle of Okinawa. Vaughn will play Sgt. Howell, a non-commissioned officer from Alabama whose job is to make sure the soldiers are ready for battle. Although he tries to instill fear in his soldiers by pushing them to their limits both physically and mentally, it is clear that he really cares about them and will do whatever it takes to keep them alive. Having a member who refuses to shoot and kill the enemy contradicts everything the sergeant has learned about war.

The two actors will also be joined by Sam Worthington, who you may remember as the guy who did the thing in James Cameron's AVATAR. Word is that the film will shoot in Australia, so I imagine we'll probably see this one towards the tail end of 2017. Regardless of its release, it'll be great to see Gibson back in the director's chair, as the man knows how to craft an entertaining picture (BRAVEHEART, APOCALYPTO).
