OUR PICKS FOR February 11th – 17th

Wanna watch something….for fans of The Good Place?

MIRACLE WORKERS (Premieres February 12th on TBS) – The pairing of Daniell Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi sounds like a recipe for brilliance…and it is. This series from Man Seeking Woman creator Simon Rich is weirdly wonderful as it takes a very sacreligious look at God and Heaven. Definitely not for the devout, if you give this show a chance I guarantee you will walk away with a smile on your face.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….from Jordan Peele that is more scifi than horror?

WEIRD CITY (Premieres February 13th on YouTube) – The Twilight Zone on CBS All Access is getting all of the buzz thanks to Jordan Peele's involvement, but this other anthology series from the GET OUT director looks to be just as unique. The trailer looks funny and strange, like a more comedic Black Mirror, and that is exactly the kind of thing we need right now.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….with the naked Korean guy from THE HANGOVER?

KEN JEONG: YOU COMPLETE ME, HO (Premieres February 14th on Netflix)Ken Jeong has starred in movies, voiced animated films, and even had his own sitcom. Why are we still calling him that guy from THE HANGOVER? Well, when you make a big screen entrance like he did, you will forever be associated with it. This standup special drops on Valentines day which is not an endorsement to watch with your special someone, but if they are cool, maybe you can both enjoy some good laughs.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….with quirky superheroes, profanity, and nudity?

DOOM PATROL (Premieres February 15th on DC Universe) – Titans definitely made people take DC Universe seriously and their second live action series will continue to do so. Like SUICIDE SQUAD, this series features a bunch of characters that have never been seen in live action before and delives a foul and adult superhero show. Definitely sarcastic and tonally similar to DEADPOOL, Doom Patrol is going to rile some feathers. It has some issues, but overall this is one of the most unique comic book adaptations to come from Marvel or DC.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….for fans of early-2000s Disney animation?

KIM POSSIBLE: THE MOVIE (Airs February 15th on Disney) – If you are in your early twenties, odds are that you watched Kim Possible in it's animated form. Disney is looking to garner some nostalgia while converting new fans for their live action update of the spy heroine. Disney original movies have their dedicated fans and while this is unlikely to be anything too spectacular, I recognize this is a big deal for some people.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….that feels like a Tim Burton superhero show?

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY (Premieres February 15th on Netflix) – Gerard Way's comic book series comes to life for a Netflix show that easily replaces their Marvel shows. Showcasing a team of unusual heroes, this is a cast of unknowns (outside of a pitch perfect Ellen Page) fully realize the comic book and make this a very enjoyable ride. Fans of the comic will be pleased at seeing these characters faithfully realized on screen while new viewers are going to rapidly become fans.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….that will bring back post traumatic crotch pain?

LORENA (Premieres February 15th on Amazon Prime) – If you are old enough to remember the case of John Wayne Bobbit being castrated by his scorned wife, then you feel the pain that this documentary brings back to light. A crazy and sensationalized case from the 1990s, this documentary will make a whole new generation scared of pissing off their significant other lest they get their dicks cut off.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….funny and scarier than it should be?

LARRY CHARLES' DANGEROUS WORLD OF COMEDY (Premieres February 15th on Netflix) – The director of BORAT and multiple episodes of Seinfeld has his finger on the pulse of comedy. This four part docu-series takes a look at comedians from places like Russia, China, India, Iran, Nigeria and Turkey to show just how differently cultures treat their humor. This looks like an intriguing subject that is not very well exposed in today's climate.
