OUR PICKS FOR February 4th – 10th

Wanna watch something….featuring some of the best filmmakers working today?

ELVIS GOES THERE (Airs February 4th on Epix) – The title of the show may have you thinking Presley, but this is a series hosted by film critic Elvis Mitchell. Joining filmmakers on trips around the world, this is a unique interview show where he will learn about what works influenced directors like Sofia Coppola, Guillermo Del Toro, Ryan Coogler, Paul Feig and more. If anything, this could be an interesting foray into some of the best directors working today.

Wanna watch something….that Steven Soderbergh filmed on an iPhone?

HIGH FLYING BIRD (Premieres February 8th on Netflix) – The brilliant mind that is Steve Soderbergh claimed to be retiring from filmmaking, but this Netflix film will mark his third movie in two years. After LOGAN LUCKY and UNSANE, Soderbergh continues his experiment with filmmaking on mobile phones for a story about the politics of the National Basketball Association. Reuniting with his The Knick star Andre Holland, this looks to be a solid flick.

Wanna watch something….that takes you back to high school in the early 2000s?

PEN15 (Premieres February 8th on Hulu) – Produced by Andy Samberg and members of The Lonely Island, this sitcom stars Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle (who co-created the series) playing thirteen year old characters amongst a cast of 13-year-olds. Erskine and Konkle are both in their 30s which gives this a very WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER vibe. It looks funny and hopefully lives up to the trailer.

Wanna watch something….that brings something scarier than zombies?

THE WALKING DEAD (Premieres February 10th on AMC) – The undead have been a foe for eight years running. Other people have been antagonists as well. Now, those two worlds combine as the series brings the comic villain Alpha and her Whisperers against the survivors of Alexandria. The Walking Dead has not been as good in recent years and has disappointed with their take on The Governor and Negan. Hopefully they get the Whisperers right.

Wanna watch something….with the guy who almost hosted the Oscars?

KEVIN HART'S GUIDE TO BLACK HISTORY (Airs February 8th on Netflix) – Even when Kevin Hart cannot get past the controversy of hosting the Oscars, he still can generate buzz. Between THE UPSIDE and this upcoming special, fans of Hart's distinct comedic style will enjoy seeing him try some new things. This special plays more like a movie rather than a stand-up concert with Hart explaining about famous figures from African American history. Both famous and less so, this looks like a fun way to learn some history you may not be familiar with.

Wanna watch something….based on a cult favorite podcast with an all-star cast?

2 DOPE QUEENS (Premieres February 9th on HBO) – HBO's series presentation of the popular podcast of the same name drew acclaim last year and now the series is back with Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson continuing their unique brand of comedy. Not veering from the format, this new series of specials will be just as enjoyable for fans of what came before just with new guest stars.

Wanna watch something….with an interesting and compelling title?

REMASTERED: THE TWO KILLINGS OF SAM COOKE (Premieres February 8th on Netflix) – Netflix has been on a hit parade with documentaries about famous musicians and there series ReMastered has delved into quite a few mysterious deaths and incidents involving famous singers. The latest analyzes the death of soul singer Sam Cooke whose connections to Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali may be more than they appear. A very intriguing premise.

Wanna watch something….with mystery, Brits, and murder in Hong Kong?

WHITE DRAGON (Premieres February 8th on Netflix) – The output from overseas is so great that it is no wonder that some shows just pop up seemingly out of nowhere. This thriller led by star John Simm follows the mysterious death of a woman and her husband's investigation to find out what happened. With some sleek international shooting locations, this could be a cool series to check out if you have nothing else to binge.
