What's new on Blu-ray and DVD this month? July 2016 banner

A new month brings a wealth of new Blu-ray and DVD releases, so now's a great time to play catch-up and see what we have ahead of us in the month of July! You can always head to our BLU-RAY AND DVD RELEASE DATES section for a more complete list, but in this column we'll go over some of the more popular titles hitting shelves over the next 4 weeks!

July 5

I don’t know about you, but I can't think of anything more patriotic to do after the 4th of July than pick up the latest season of House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright! If real bio-pics are your thing, then Tom Hiddleston's take on Hank Williams arrives in the form of I SAW THE LIGHT. You can also get a refresher course on Christopher Nolan's DC ventures with a special edition of THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy. Batfleck comes later this month!

This week is particularly heartfelt, in that it brings us one of Anton Yelchin's final performances via GREEN ROOM. The Jeremy Saulnier-directed film is one of the best of the year, and Yelchin delivers a fantastic performance (no surprise there). For those of you who love Richard Linklater's DAZED AND CONFUSED, his spiritual sequel, EVERYBODY WANTS SOME, also comes out on Blu-ray/DVD. I'm also gonna give a shout out to iZombie, which is from the creator of Veronica Mars and features a super cute and charismatic lead in Rose McIver!

You may have noticed some serious BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE action going on this week, and that's because the film hits Blu-ray/DVD in no less than 4 variations! You have your standard packaged, the 3D iteration, and also two Amazon exclusives that feature either a Batman or Superman figure! Each copy also includes Zack Snyder's ultimate edition, which features 30 additional minutes of content. As you've probably read online, this new cut of the film helps to iron out some pacing issues and fill in some plot holes. Does it change the movie entirely? No, but I don't think anyone will disagree with the fact that it's a superior version of the film.

July 26

Rounding out the month is the latest musical picture from director Joe Carney (ONCE, BEGIN AGAIN) and my personal favorite of the year (so far), SING STREET! If you want something with a little more testosterone, perhaps the first-person action flick HARDCORE HENRY will not make you dizzy on your living room TV! You can also relive the Penguins' recent hockey reign with the 2016 Stanly Cup Blu-ray! If none of that tickles your fancy, well, there's always next month!
