What's new on Blu-ray and DVD this month? (September 2016)

What's New banner September 2016

A new month brings a wealth of new Blu-ray and DVD releases, so now's a great time to play catch-up and see what we have ahead of us in the month of September! You can always head to our BLU-RAY AND DVD RELEASE DATES section for a more complete list, but in this column we'll go over some of the more popular titles hitting shelves over the next 4 weeks!

September 6

We kick off the month with all sorts of varied goodies, starting with some magical realism in NOW YOU SEE ME 2. If you can check your logic at the door, you just might enjoy it! If you're looking for something with more weight, the collector's edition of THE IRON GIANT is being released in a standard and deluxe edition. Kate Beckinsale provides some laughs in the underrated period comedy, LOVE & FRIENDSHIP. If you need some TV action, then I'm sure The Flash and Supernatural will fill that void!

September 13

As you can see, this week is shaping up to be one of the biggest of the year with the release of Marvel's CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. Whether you go with the standard or 3D edition, both are packed with plenty of extras to keep you entertained after the credits roll. It's also worth noting that the 30th Anniversary Edition of ALIENS hits Blu-ray in a spiffy, new set! If you'd like to keep the horror streak going, THE CONJURING 2 also arrives for your viewing pleasure.

September 20

This week is an interesting one that requires a bit of explanation. You'll note that STAR TREK BEYOND is first on the list despite Paramount Pictures not offering up an official release date just yet. Bill Hunt, a reputable source over at The Digital Bits, feels confident in this date thanks to his trusted colleagues at several retailers. I take his word for it, but the date is subject to change, so keep that in mind. In any case, this week also sees the release of the latest NINJA TURTLES film, NEIGHBORS 2 and FREE STATE OF JONES, so there's plenty of variety to go around!

September 27

September ends with a bang, starting off with the release of the Duncan Jones' take on the fantasy genre with WARCRAFT. It wasn't my cup of tea, but certainly worth a look for those craving something different than LORD OF THE RINGS or Game of Thrones. CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE aims to bring viewers some laughs, courtesy of Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. We also have Blake Lively's THE SHALLOWS, which promises some popcorn entertainment in the form of a prolonged shark attack. For my fellow fans of Nicolas Winding Refn, THE NEON DEMON is every bit as crazy and enjoyable as his previous efforts! If that's not your speed, that's okay! There's plenty more coming our way in the month of October!
