Will Smith prepares his son, Jaden for what the planet has become in the trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth

The first international trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s AFTER EARTH is giving me some mixed feelings.

Have I fully recovered from the disaster that was THE LAST AIRBENDER adaptation? No. Am I willing to forgive? Possibly. Does this trailer help? Not sure.

The first seconds of the trailer had me. Then as I’m listening to Smith’s interesting Southern accent, I get lost. I wonder if the majority of the movie will contain flashbacks of father and son moments while Kitai (Jaden Smith) treks across what Earth has become. I’m not too concerned about Jaden carrying a movie, since I did actually enjoy his performance in THE KARATE KID update. However, there were quite a few comedic moments in that. Jaden in a possibly coming of age film with more dramatic moments? We’ll see. Check out the trailer and synopsis below.

One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

AFTER EARTH is due out June 7, 2013.
