Wolf Creek 2 coming with more Australian mayhem

I had heard high praise for WOLF CREEK a few years ago, so I decided to check it out. Good original horror is hard to find, and the promise of an Australia-based slasher seemed intriguing to say the least.

For me, the original was a mixed bag. I liked how the killer was far more jovial (at least initially) than any we’d previously seen, and that most of the film took place in the broad daylight. But toward the end of the film, it veered into stupid horror cliches (if you knock out a bad guy, make SURE he’s dead before running away), and I was ultimately less than impressed.

But now WOLF CREEK 2 is on the horizon, and according to Bloody Disgusting director Greg McLean and star John Jarratt are returning. Here’s a quick plot summary: “While seeking an authentic Australian adventure, one unlucky backpacker learns the deepest, darkest secrets of the Outback’s most infamous serial killer.”

Sounds exactly like the first film, except at that point there were a few unlucky backpackers who learned his darkest secrets.

A few years ago, McLean had this to say about a sequel. “I’d like to see what else Mick is up to, for sure, but I’m not sure anyone else in the world does. You’ve got to top the first one, and how much horror can you handle? If I did make Wolf Creek 2 it would almost have to be unreleasable, rated XXX, banned all over the world, never to be screened in public. That’s kind of intriguing.”

But now? There’s a script “maintaining the logic and rules of the first movie [whilst ensuring] its link to reality and the true crime genre is never lost.”

Hm, I never questioned the link to “reality” in the first film, so what will this one be doing to stretch those limits?

Head over to Bloody Disgusting for the first teaser poster from the film.
