Nicolas Cage to team up with director William Friedkin for action/thriller I Am Wrath

Nicolas Cage is fighting hard to get his groove back, which unfortunately means that he’s starring in just about everything these days.  Certainly his financial woes play some role in that, but at least he’s teaming with some of his more successful cohorts of the past (CON AIR and STOLEN‘s Simon West, for one) and is now primed to star in famed director William Friedkin’s next pic, I AM WRATH.  Friedkin is best known for THE EXORCIST, THE FRENCH CONNECTION, TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. and most recently, KILLER JOE.

Here’s the synopsis (from Deadline):

Following the murder of his wife, Stanley (Cage) finds that the police are unable to catch the perpetrators. He uncovers a thick plot of police corruption and realizes that he will have to find justice on his own. As he awakens to the level of degradation of the people sworn to serve and protect, we get a little Rage in the Cage as he becomes a vigilante out to destroy those who abuse their power.

Sounds like a perfectly stereotypical thriller from the house of Cage, eh?  But, is that really a bad thing?  I don’t know, but having William Friedkin onboard is a definite bonus in my opinion, as the director has the chops to bring some hardcore thrills when he’s on top of his game.  Mix that in with Cage doing his best…uh, Cage, and you’ve got the potential for a damn fun movie.

I AM WRATH is set to begin production in February.  More as this develops.
