Sex Education: Emma Mackey to exit the Netflix comedy series after Season 4

School is out for Emma Mackey now that the actress is leaving Netflix’s Sex Education after four seasons. Mackey confirmed her exit from the coming-of-age comedy series while attending the BAFTA Awards, where she won the Rising Star award for her outstanding performance in the laugh-out-loud drama.

“Season 5? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week!” Mackey told RadioTimes. “No, I don’t think I’ll be in season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.”

Previously, Mackey said she’d have a minor role in Sex Education season 4, with Maeve traveling to America to live her dream at the prestigious Wallace University, where she’ll be taught by cult author Thomas Molloy (Dan Levy).

“It feels very familiar! And it’s a bit more sporadic because we have more characters. So there’s… I’m not in it as consistently,” Mackey said before filming Season 4. “But we’re in the middle of filming now, and I’m excited to be back. And yeah, I’m intrigued to know what’s going to happen – because I also don’t know. I’m also finding out as we go along, so it’ll be fun!”

Sex Education Season 4 also adds Thaddea Graham, Marie Reuther, Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James, and Imani Yahshua as series regulars.

Dan Levy will play Thomas Molloy, a famous author and Maeve’s US course tutor at her Ivy League college. Meanwhile, details about other characters joining the series are being kept hush.

Here is the official synopsis for Sex Education Season 4:

Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier – their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, whilst Eric is praying they won’t be losers again.

But Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students – they thought they were progressive, but this new college is another level. There’s daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe, and a group of kids who are popular for being… kind?!

Viv is totally thrown by the college’s student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A Level, and Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him.

Over in the US, Maeve is living her dream at the prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her whilst adjusting to not being an only child at home or the only therapist on campus…

Popular for being kind, you say? That’s refreshing. My college experience was quite different, though I suppose that happens when you attend a tech school for would-be game developers hopped up on Red Bull and the latest entry in the Pokemon game franchise.

Returning for another season of experimentation, sexual innuendo, and life-altering revelations are Gillian Anderson, Mimi Keene, George Robinson, Alistair Petrie, and Samantha Spiro.

Sex Education Season 4 is aiming for a 2023 release on Netflix. Will you be enrolling in the new season when it starts? Let us know in the comments!
