Shonda Rhimes seeks to conquer the big screen with The Dare Divas

You really have to hand it to Shonda Rhimes for what she has managed to do over at ABC. For the 2016-2017 broadcast season, she will have five series with her name on it hitting the network's airwaves – GREY'S ANATOMY, SCANDAL, HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER, THE CATCH and STILL STAR-CROSSED… and even with that much on her plate, she is seeking to take her brand of success to the Hollywood big screen.

Rhimes would produce a feature film, with her Shondaland partner Betsy Beers, based on the online personalities The Dare Divas, whose life rights Fox 2000 is in negotiations to acquire at the moment. The Dare Divas were formed following the sudden death of one of its members' husbands, with the purpose of dealing with that grief through daring experiences that push them to appreciate life. Between the four women involved, they travel the world to undertake sky diving, cliff diving, etc. (Seems like a lot of diving, huh?)

Rhimes was once involved in the Hollywood system, having penned the screenplay for the 2003 Britney Spears film CROSSROADS. She is also the sole accredited writer on PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT. It may be easy to mock those titles on her resume, but when you see what she has accomplished as a showrunner on network television, she has a brand made of gold right now. It'll be interesting to see if she can carry that over into feature film territory. I give her a great shot at doing so.
