Star Wars team congratulates Avengers on box office win

In case you missed the news, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR beat STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS to have the biggest opening weekend ever. It was a pretty big deal. That’s no easy feat, especially considering AWAKENS had the second-place movie, STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, beat by almost $30 million. But alas, when the smoke cleared INFINITY WAR emerged victoriously, and the Star Wars team has officially passed the crown with grace…and an Instagram post.

The Lucasfilm Instagram account posted a letter last night signed by Kathleen Kennedy congratulating the Avengers on being the new record holder. The letter contains a picture of Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) extending out a lightsaber to Iron Man, because the box office crown is, and has always been, a lightsaber.

Going into the weekend the box office estimates had risen to the point where analysists knew INFINITY WAR would at least beat THE LAST JEDI during its first weekend, and by a decent margin. Still, AWAKENS’ total seemed a bit out of reach. By Saturday the numbers showed the Avengers getting quite close to AWAKENS, and by Sunday it had officially passed the movie, gaining an even bigger lead by Monday. Thus, we have a new a leader, and a new era of rule and govern is upon us.

This post comes after Ryan Reynolds (DEADPOOL) shared his congrats to the Avengers crew and isn’t the first time a movie has conceded their top spot to another movie. When JURASSIC WORLD took the top spot from the first AVENGERS, Marvel put out a post congratulating the dino epic starring Marvel alum Chris Pratt (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY). Hollywood is truly a magical place of sharing, caring, and peace.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is in theaters now, and SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY arrives May 25.
