Strangers: Camila Mendes & Maya Hawke to lead Hitchcockian Netflix comedy

Riverdale’s Camila Mendes and Stranger Things‘ Maya Hawke are set to lead STRANGERS, a Netflix feature film from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson that shows what can happen when a chance meeting results in a peculiar union. To be presented as her second film after Someone Great, also a Netflix joint, Strangers is described as a subverted Hitchock-ian dark comedy featuring the scariest protagonists of all: teenage girls. It follows Drew (Alpha, it girl) and Eleanor (beta, alt girl) who, after a clandestine meet-cute, team up to go after each other’s bullies.

Robinson and Celeste Ballard co-wrote the script, which Robinson is also producing with Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron for Likely Story, which already has an overall deal set up at Netflix.

Best known for playing Veronica Lodge on The CW's Riverdale, Mendes will reprise her fan-favorite character when the show returns for its fifth season in January of 2021. You can also catch her as Tala in director Max Barbakow's Hulu feature PALM SPRINGS, starring Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti. and J.K. Simmons. As for Maya Hawke, the daughter of actress Uma Thurman and actor Ethan Hawke recently made a splash while playing Robin Buckley for the third season of Netflix's Stranger Things. She also stars as Frankie in Gia Coppola's MAINSTREAM, a cautionary tale about three people struggling to preserve their identities as they form an eccentric love triangle within the fast-moving internet age.

To check out Robinson's directing chops before Strangers pulls onto the platform, be sure to check out Someone Great, which is available to stream on Netflix right now.
