Terence Stamp for Anchorman 2? Sequel to The Limey?

Recently in the UK there was a screening for SONG FOR MARION, the upcoming music-based drama by Paul Andrew Williams and staring Terence Stamp. There was a Q&A with Stamp that followed and in attendance was a reader for AICN who shared with them some tasty information.

According to the report that was sent to AICN, Terence Stamp is in early negotiations to join ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND CONTINUES:

“When asked what’s next for him, he said Will Ferrell‘s people had reached out to see if he would be interested in playing a Rupert Murdoch-type figure in Ferrell’s next film. This would be ANCHORMAN 2 presumably? Stamp said he would love to take part in it, but he’s not yet been officially offered the part.”

The Rupert Murdoch inspired character would fit in with the rumors that the movie will be set in the 80s (Murdoch’s media company News Corporation bought 20th Century Fox in 1985) and I think Terence Stamp would be fantastic for the part. Could his character be the “bad guy” of ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND RETURNS? General Zod Vs Ron Burgundy? That just isn’t fair…he better bring Baxter for back-up.

And although it is unlikely to happen now, Terence Stamp also mentioned some plans he had for a sequel to THE LIMEY:

“He was asked directly about whether The Kinks song ‘Waterloo Sunset’ really was inspired by his relationship with Julie Christie in the 1960s, to which he replied that Ray Davies had apparently told Stamp’s brother that indeed it was. That led to another anecdote: that Stamp has written a screenplay for a “loose” sequel to THE LIMEY, Steven Soderbergh’s ice-cool 90s thriller. It was intended to star Stamp and Julie Christie, with the plot revolving around an aging gangster going after the ex-partner who betrayed him and married his lover (Christie). The project halted when both Soderbergh and Christie retired from the business, and he wasn’t sure if it would ever see the light of day.”

I for one would love to see a return of Wilson (not to be confused with this Wilson) to the big screen, but the chances of it happening are pretty slim. With Steven Soderbergh retiring, I’m not sure if I’d want someone else to helm the sequel. I guess it would all depend on who was picked to direct the flick.

ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND CONTINUES starts filming this spring so if Terence Stamp does officially decide to take on the Channel 4 News Team we should hear about it very shortly.
