The Predator could start a trilogy with Shane Black at the helm

We're less than two months away from the release of THE PREDATOR, director Shane Black's "inventive sequel" to the 1987 sci-fi action classic PREDATOR, and if this film is well-received producer John Davis is hoping it will be the start of a trilogy, with Black coming back to direct two follow-ups.

This isn't one of those situations where a trilogy is being mapped out before the first installment is even released, but the hope is there. For his part, Black says,

I would love to say we've been planning a trilogy, but I take one day at a time. In motion-picture terms that's one movie at a time."

That's good to hear, because films that are crafted with the intention of starting a trilogy often don't get their sequels and end up feeling incomplete. I would love to see more PREDATOR movies beyond THE PREDATOR, but each one needs to be satisfying on its own.

Earlier this year, THE PREDATOR went through extensive reshoots to rework the finale. Production Weekly has revealed that the project, which was filmed in the Vancouver area, is now heading back to Vancouver for two more days of filming, stirring up speculation that Black could be shooting an extra scene to lead into the hoped-for sequels.

Written by Black and his THE MONSTER SQUAD collaborator Fred Dekker, THE PREDATOR stars Boyd Holbrook, Yvonne Strahovski, Jacob Tremblay, Thomas Jane, Keegan-Michael Key, Trevante Rhodes, Alfie Allen, Augusto Aguilera, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Edward James Olmos, and Jake Busey. Busey is playing the son of the character his father played in PREDATOR 2.

The synopsis:

From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.

THE PREDATOR is scheduled to reach theatres on September 14th.
