TV Land orders a pilot for Heathers anthology series

Back in the summer of 2009, we heard that a television series based on Michael Lehmann's 1988 dark comedy HEATHERS was in the works. For a while it looked like nothing was going to happen with that idea, but now, seven years later, it has proven to still have life in it – TV Land has ordered a Heathers series pilot that has been written by Jason A. Micallef (writer of the 2011 film BUTTER) and will be directed by BACHELORETTE / SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE helmer Leslye Headland.

The original film starred Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, and Kim Walker. The story centered on a girl named

Veronica as she navigates a clique of mean girls — all named Heather — and rebels after meeting J.D., the new guy at school. Soon, the Heathers start "accidentally" dying at the hands of Veronica and J.D., who cover up the deaths by faking them as suicides.

Little is known about Micallef's approach to the material, only that the pilot will reimagine the three Heathers.

Lest you think this series will just be drawing out the story of Veronica, J.D., and the Heathers across multiple seasons, it has also been revealed that this is being envisioned as an anthology series, with each season focusing on a new set of Heathers in a different setting.

This is sort of baffling to me, but we'll keep you updated on the project as the pilot moves forward.
