Under the Dome gets a second season; Stephen King to write first episode

CBS' "Under the Dome" has officially become a TV show.

The network just announced a second season renewal for the series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel; it will return next summer. Add to that: Stephen King is penning the first episode and will stay on board as executive producer.

Despite grousing from fans of the book that the show has taken too many liberties with the source material (which King subsequently addressed), the show has been a ratings performer for CBS. As per Deadline: "After a big premiere, which soared to a 4.6 rating in 18-49 and 17.8 million total viewers in Live+7, Under The Dome kept steady. Its ratings have been on a growth path for the last two weeks, most recently drawing 2.7/8 and 11.4 million in the fast nationals last week."

All of that means the show has ben a very nice surprise for the network, which wants to keep the good times rolling.

"Under the Dome" is the story of a small New England town that is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The town's inhabitants must deal with surviving the post-apocalyptic conditions while searching for answers to what this barrier is, where it came from and if and when it will go away.
