Weekend Box-Office: February 18-20, 2011

Liam
Neeson. Action star…!!!

When the #5 movie of the
weekend grosses $17M, you know that it’s been a good
weekend at the box-office! For the first time in the past 14
weeks, this weekend’s numbers were greater than the same period
last year, thanks to the three new releases, each of which
managed to slip into the top 5, along with last week’s #1 and #3
movies. In the end though, it was Liam Neeson
‘s latest
thriller, UNKNOWN, that managed to stick the landing in first
place with close to $22M. The teen sci-fi flick, I AM NUMBER FOUR,
also managed a pretty solid opening in 2nd place and close to
$20M, while Martin Lawrence’s 3rd go-around as a rubber-suited fat
woman, scored him a decent $17M and a 5th place finish.

The original BIG MOMMA’S HOUSE opened with $26M
back in 2000 and ended up with $118M, while its 2006 sequel had
opened with $28M, but only totaled $70M, when all was said and
done. This third movie will likely not even get to that much, at
least if you go according to its
miserable reviews
and word of mouth. The
bigger surprise of the weekend was last week’s #3 movie, GNOMEO
& JULIET though, as it only lost about 24% of its audience
from last week and managed to remain in 3rd place, which is a rare
thing. In contrast, Adam Sandler’s #1 movie from last week, JUST
GO WITH IT, lost 40% of its audience from last weekend and slipped
into 4th place this time around.

The other film that doesn’t
seem to be losing any steam, despite being released over 3
months ago
, is next weekend’s favorite at the Oscars, THE
KING’S SPEECH, which just seems to be hanging out in the top 10
like an unwanted houseguest. The film actually managed to surpass
the $100M mark this weekend, which makes it highly profitable
along with being highly praised (the film apparently only cost the
Weinstein Company $15M).

For all those Bieber fans in
our audience (uh-huh), I’m sorry to report that your
baby-baby-baby’s film dropped from 2nd to 6th place this weekend,
losing close to 55% of its audience from last weekend, which makes
sense since it was likely his biggest fans that caught the film
last weekend, and without much interest from anyone else, it’s
likely to get booted from the top 10 pretty soon. And speaking of
getting booted from the top 10, the films that left our top board
this week included THE GREEN HORNET ($95M), SANCTUM ($22M) and
TRUE GRIT ($164M).

Next weekend sees the release
of 2 opposite-minded films with DRIVE
ANGRY
featuring Nicolas Cage driving with an attitude, 3D
and the lovely Amber Heard by his side, while HALL
PASS
features two whipped husbands played by Owen Wilson
and Jason Sudeikis, whose wives (played by the awesome Christina
Applegate and Jenna Fischer) allow them a "week off" off
marriage in order to get their rocks off (if you didn’t see the RED
BAND TRAILER
yet, check it out and enjoy Alyssa Milano’s
awesome rack). So what film do you think will finish atop the
box-office next weekend? VOTE
