Del Toro confirmed Jan. 30, 2008

Guillermo Del Toro It was a rather surreal moment when it was announced that lovably furry directing visionary Guillermo Del Toro had entered official talks to direct the two back-to-back installments of the THE HOBBIT. I mean, it's a geektastic perfect storm unlike any we've ever seen. Still, we had to bottle our excitement seeing as how he was just "in talks". However, our inner geek is just about ready to blow a massive geektastic load as Del Toro was recently in France helping to promote THE ORPHANAGE, a film he produced, and the film's director, Juan Antonio Bayona, revealed rather nonchalantly that Del Toro had signed on to direct THE HOBBIT. What's more, Del Toro does nothing to correct him or remind him that he's merely "in talks". Check it out courtesy of the folks over at "The One Ring" over HERE (Note: Video is in Spanish and French). If that isn't some kinda confirmation, who knows what is.

In not really related news, Empire Online has posted the first in what we presume is a series of video diaries from the set of Del Toro's HELLBOY 2: THE GOLDEN ARMY. It's your typical video diary stuff but it's worth checking out if you're slobbering to see the film. Which you really should be. Check it out over HERE. HELLBOY tangoes with all kinds of mythical creatures on July 11th.

Extra Tidbit: Now if they can only get Del Toro back on HALO.

...at this point, I think I actually prefer Del Toro directing the Hobbit over Jackson. I know I'm putting myself at risk of being assassinated by LOTR fan boys everywhere, but as much as I prefer continuity in a story like this and admire Jackson's vision in the previous films, I think it would be good to give someone else a chance, and why not someone else who sees the world through a similarly child-like prism such as Del Toro? He's proven with Pan's Labyrinth that he can balance special effects, a credible storyline and character development to create a moving final product, so I'm all for it. Besides, Jackson got overindulgent with The Return of the King. We all gave him the obligatory pat on the back as he rode into the sunset and I say we should just keep it that way.

This kills virtually any hope of him doing the last Harry Potter film, which I would have liked him to do instead. Ah well.

Sounds good so far. but i really think the idea of splitting up this book into 2 movies is just to rip us off. They managed to do it with LOTR, why cant they do it with the Hobbit?

Im glad he will be directing, but i guess this dismisses the idea of him directing the LAST Harry Potter Film! or would he be able to do BOTH?

Awesome, as long as Jackson oversees it all, including the script and Weta does all the design. Also, what about Ian McKellan!? He is a must! There can be no other Gandalf!

As for Del Toro, Pan's Labyrinth was good but I thought Hellboy was utterly, utterly awful, and the way Del Toro handled CGI in it and the overall tone makes me a little worried. Let's hope it's closer to the former than the latter.

This is unbelievable. this is truly a the perfect match. And I've read The Hobbit and LOTR each about five times. Peter Jackson did it perfectly and Del Toro is the best fit for The Hobbit. Now lets just hope neither of their pride ever gets in the way and one of them doesn't split the project over "creative differences." but I have hope. Getting Jackson back was the first step and signing Del Toro is definitely, in my mind, the right second step.

So long as they keep the actual "The Hobbit" as one movie without putting in any of the interstitial stuff they're gonna make up a second movie with, I'll be okay.

On a side note, doesn't GDT look a lot like Peter Jackson with a thinner beard and blond hair in that pic? Maybe it's just me, but still...

I don't know what to think yet.
I don't wish for a HOBBIT movie, but it seems like they're starting off on the right foot, at least.
