Director Colin Trevorrow hints at future Jurassic World movies

04.23.2014

MINOR SPOILERS. I guess.

The next entry in the JURASSIC PARK franchise, JURASSIC WORLD, is currently shooting in Hawaii and Empire caught up with director Colin Trevorrow, who discussed the premise of setting up the new film as a part of a series, rather than an "episodic" entry (it sounds like he's trying to say trilogy without saying trilogy). He also discussed the character relationship between Chris Pratt's ex-military character and Omar Sy's character, who are essentially best friends in the film. Trevorrow also dished a bit on the theme of the film, which sounds pretty consistent with the usual JURASSIC PARK theme.

On the discussion of sequels to JURASSIC WORLD:

“We definitely talked about [sequels] a lot,” the director/co-writer revealed. “We wanted to create something that would be a little bit less arbitrary and episodic, and something that could potentially arc into a series that would feel like a complete story.”

On Pratt and Sy's characters in the film and their potential to be recurring:

“He’s essentially Chris Pratt’s best friend,” he said of the Sy character. “They work together and have some pretty cool action scenes together. I wanted to create a relationship there that could be memorable and potentially carry on to future films.”

On the theme of the film:

“It’s about alpha dominance and the fact that humans have been the alpha species for a very long time", he explained, "and so now we’ve brought back another that happened to be the alpha species during its time, and we have to co-exist, so what is that relationship?”

Yeah, just a few nuggets tossed our way, but interesting nonetheless. I'm excited to see Pratt in this film as I think it's cool as shit that Andy Dwyer is becoming a big action star. It's just nuts. In just about all the press Trevorrow has done for the film so far (which isn't much), he always comes across as someone that is passionate about the gig and really wants to deliver the magic of the experience of seeing JURASSIC PARK for the first time. It's already in my top 5 for 2015.

JURASSIC WORLD, starring Chris Pratt, Omar Sy, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jake Johnson, Irrfan Khan, Judy Greer, Vincent D'Onofrio, Nick Robinson, Ty Simpkins, and BD Wong opens in theaters on June 12, 2015.

I'll choose quality over quantity anytime. That being said, i have high hopes for this movie. And the more JP/JW movies the better!

Colin Tervorrow's name sounds a little like something Scooby Doo might say.

I don't know why but...

Considering I've never heard of Trevorrow before, and all I've seen Pratt in is The Five Year Engagement and a (pretty damn exciting) Guardians of the Galaxy trailer...

... I'm really excited for this.

Everything I read about it gives me a positive buzz.

Jurassic Park came out when I was 13 and was going through a dinosaurs phase. I was in awe of it. The first time you see that dinosaur go up on its hind legs to eat from the tree - made me gasp. The first

Jurassic Park came out when I was 13 and was going through a dinosaurs phase. I was in awe of it. The first time you see that dinosaur go up on its hind legs to eat from the tree - made me gasp. The first film to get that sort of emotion from me. I'm now 34 and still remember it, and it's probably where my love of cinema began.

And despite the sequels, when this film was finally announced - I wasn't like "oh god, not another one" I was "good! Bring it on". And the feeling had been pretty uphill from that point.

Yeah, I'd like some originals back- I think you should always go with having Jeff Goldblum in your film. Always. Just cameo would make me feel fuzzy.

Audiences are spoilt with 'big monsters' at the moment (Pacifim Rim and the upcoming Godzilla) and that's cool, but... Seeing dinosaurs on screen - animals that were real, and that we'll never truly get to 'meet' - that's what the magic of cinema is all about :-)

I so hope Jurassic World manages to make a few 13 year olds gasp :-)

Couldn't have put it better myself. The Jurassic Park films, the first one in particular, were incredible because they presented believable, living breathing creatures and it was a convincing, awe-inspiring spectacle.

Its about alpha dominance and the fact that humans have been the alpha species for a very long time, and so now weve brought back another that happened to be the alpha species during its time, and we have to co-exist, so what is that relationship?

Isn't that the exact same theme of the 1st movie? But I have faith, Trevorrow definitely seems to know what he's doing and Chris Pratt is shaping up to be a terrific lead. I just hope this resembles the original classic film, rather than the

The first movie was about the alpha dominant species (Humans) enslaving the ex-alpha dominant species (Dinosaurs) in order to turn them into zoo animals. So not, this isn't the same as JP1

More sequels? How can that be, if...

... it's taken them years to even decide on a draft.

they would just tell us things. Stop keeping things hidden.

Bishop and Starlord, the closest we will get to X-men and Guardians in the same movie.
Not sure how I feel about this movie though. Jurassic Park 3 was week and if this turns into Dinoriders...that might be funny actually.

I think it's a terrible idea to not involve the original cast--Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum in particular. I seem to be the only one who isn't excited for this.

At least Trevorrow is at least giving us details about somewhat of the film unlike Abrams with the new Star Wars films. At least this new Jurassic Park film can confirm details and storylines other than being a rumor everytime.

But I have complete faith that Trevorrow will deliver us fans a great Jurassic Park film.

Why so eager to know so much about these films? Remember how you felt after seeing a movie at the theater when you were a kid? Going in fresh, not knowing anything about the film until u saw the film? I remember that feeling! And I want it back! I'm so glad these guys are keeping things so close to the vest! I admit there are films I yearn to see set photos, footage, trailers, etc. sometimes I don't care about spoilers. But films like Jurassic park or Star Wars, are special films to me and tons

I admit there are films I yearn to see set photos, footage, trailers, etc. sometimes I don't care about spoilers. But films like Jurassic park or Star Wars, are special films to me and tons of people. I remember seeing empire strikes back for the first time in the theater and having my mind blown! I was in 7th grade when Jurassic park came out and had only seen a teaser trailer for it. Not really knowing in full what it was about. And holy shit! Mind blown! Surprise has a lot to do with the movie going experience. I want to be able to try to refrain from any kind of hint or clue as to the plot of any of these. I hope trevorrow and JJ don't give us jack shit about these films. All I want to see is the cast, that's it! I hope the only trailers they put out are literally teaser trailers and don't give up anything! I can't stand reading or hearing pre judge these films and have they're minds made up b4 they even see the film.

I agree with everything Jhowington32 just said...but JJ Abrams is NOT doing the whole secrecy thing because of any of that. I can guarantee it. Secrecy for secrecy's sake is his MO. His shtick. He does it because he thinks that gives him his own signature element that makes him special. And it's so played out. It bit him in the butt with Star Trek Into Darkness and the Khan shenanigans, and it'll surely come back to haunt him when half the world is looking forward to ANYTHING Star Wars

Besides, if you want to go into a movie knowing nothing but the cast...no one is forcing you to read these articles, or watch the trailers, or anything of that sort. Despite the information age we're living in right now, anyone is completely capable of keeping the nostalgia of movies alive by going in and knowing as little as possible. Just exhibit some self-control and stay away from any of the promotion for that particular movie. Seriously, it's not that hard. That way, people like you are happy, and the people who actually want as much info as possible are happy as well.

That's how I operate in regards to movies. I only watch teaser's. Trailers that run 3 min's have shown you all the clues to what's coming up in the movie, and sometimes give away major story twists.

I went into The Avengers having seen the trailer, and although the movie was great I was left most of the time going *oh yeah, this was shown in the trailer, so its leading to that*. 2yrs later my wife and I went to see CAP2. We saw NOTHING, not a single teaser or trailer for the

We saw NOTHING, not a single teaser or trailer for the movie. And we were utterly BLOWN AWAY by the movie. Watched the trailer when I got home, and we are happy we didn't watch it. They showed way too much in the trailer, including Fury upside down in his SUV which is a huge hint for anyone who watches it without having seen CAP2.
