Get your first look at Michael Fassbender in Assassin's Creed

08.27.2015

Gaming fans haven't heard much about the ASSASSIN'S CREED film adaptation lately, but it looks like production is full-steam ahead come next Monday! The Justin Kurzel-directed picture will star Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Michael Kenneth Williams and Ariane Labed. Check out the first picture of Fassbender in costume as well as a fresh synopsis below!

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Video game adaptations are notorious for being underwhelming affairs, so I'm hoping that producer Fassbender and director Kurzel have something really solid in-store for us. The character Fassbender portrays is not from the games, so it looks like they'll be deviating from what's already been established. That's a good thing in my book, because as great a concept as it is, the video games have certainly lost their strength in terms of story.

ASSASSIN'S CREED is scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2016.

Aguilar means 'Eagles', a derivative of the word aquila which was Connor Kenway's boat name, and fit the naming theme of the whole franchise. I'm liking what I see so far!

I usually expect video game movies to suck big time.

Pretty much the only thing giving me hope with this one is that Fassbender has a great track record and doesn't usually seem to do bad films. As for the costume it looks great.

I'm optimistic about this one. I think this game and Splinter Cell have the most potential for well-made movie adaptations. But studios need to understand that not everything from a video game can/should be translated to the screen. I feel like the whole Callum Lynch being hooked up to a machine to view his ancestor's life should be left out. Just have the story open and close on Aguilar, the Callum Lynch aspect doesn't really add much to the story for a movie, IMO.

Looks good. Now hopefully the rest of the film follows; it definitely has the talent to be one of the better video game adaptions of recent years (even though the bar isn't really set all that high).

Love the look, and I'm thrilled that they are taking a different protagonist, rather than redoing what the games already did. But I believe this is an Ubisoft production so it will likely exist in the same universe as the games. At least I hope so.

Production is being partly handled by Ubisoft, the franchise's developer. I have a feeling that, much like Marvel, developer/IP ownership will greatly improve the quality of the finished product, keeping grubby studio hands off it, which would undoubtedly make it trashy.

Given the look of Macbeth, I am at least optimist this won't look or feel like Prince of Persia. However, I'm still apprehensive because there's only been really one good video game adaptation and that was Silent Hill.

I thought Silent Hill was crap. If that's your example of a good video game adaption it just goes to show how bad the genre really is (not that I would disagree it's probably one of the better one's).

I thought Silent Hill captured the eerie feeling and small scope of the video game successfully, as well as having an ambiguous ending the satisfied the very nihilistic conclusion. Now if we were talking about Silent Hills 2, that was absolute garbage.

I'm with Roy Batty on Silent Hill. It wasn't a direct adaptation of the game, it wasn't perfect and I would have liked it more if it was Sean Bean playing the actual Harry Mason (not the retcon we got in the God-awful sequel), but it captured the right tone and look of the game without turning it into a nerd fest of game cliches, and somehow made the narrative work as a film.

They got the look right...

But we all know they are going to fuck up the story and this will just be another shitty video game movie. Look at how much effort was put into Prince of Persia and how shitty that movie was. Getting the looks right is like 20% of what they need to do to make this successful.

Really glad they left Ezio alone.... Staring fresh could be the best thing that can happen to this. "Nothing is true, everything is permitted."
