Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool tracking to open with $55 million

01.22.2016

Deadpool

According to THR, DEADPOOL is currently tracking to open with $55 million over the long Valentine's Day and Presidents Day weekend, however it's not clear if the estimate includes Monday's numbers. Some think Ryan Reynolds' passion project could go even higher, and hit $60 million in its box office debut.

That would be pretty damn impressive, especially for a reportedly low-budget R-rated comic book movie based on a fan-favorite, but not necessarily well-known, character. Although I imagine Fox will be extremely happy if that does end up being the actual first weekend total, it'll be very interesting to see how the film will perform in its sophomore outing at the box office. How much do you think DEADPOOL will earn in its first and second weekends?

DEADPOOL will face off against ZOOLANDER 2 (which is tracking to open north of $20 million) and HOW TO BE SINGLE on February 12, 2016.

Eve if it's the case...

And I really think they are overly optimistic with this one (They should remember the MANY other movies that had GRRRRREAT internet buzz but failed to deliver came the BO results).
So, even if these figure are correct, considering how un-well-known the character is for the majority of the audience, I'm afraid DP will be VERY front loaded, regardless of its quality.
Hope I'm wrong obviously !

Seems overly optimistic

Yes the marketing has been interesting, but all we have mostly scene is the scene on the overpass. That's literally 90% of all of the trailers.

I hope it's good and does well. I like Reynolds and it seems like a perfect role for him, but $55 million seems way too optimistic. I'd be surprised if it did $20 million. I've seen no reaction at the theater when the trailer plays from any other patron.

I'm thinking between $90 - $100 million...

If it really does hit $60 million (or close), a reasonable drop-off to expect would be 45%. If it is as good as the early reports (and the spectacular marketing), then it should shave at least 5% off of that. That puts it over $90 million for the first two weekends (over $100 million for the first two weeks). Good for them. I really like Reynolds, but he desperately needs a successful film for a change.

Awesome. Side note - You know who needed this marketing team? Dredd.

If this turns out to be true, I would be estatic. Out of all of the recent, risky fanboy films to come out as of late (ie Pacific Rim, Kingsman) this is the film I would most like to see get a sequel or a proper trilogy.

But if it does end up making this and/or more, then you really have to thank the marketing and public relations team for doing such an excellent job of promoting this and getting the film's attention out there.

Really?! If thats so, then the marketing really sold this movie to people that aren't familiar with the source material.

Excited

I wasn't really familiar with Deadpool until this became a passion project for Reynolds, and with this opening the same day as Zoolander No. 2, I'll probably be seeing both sometime over the weekend.

Can we all agree, 2Lander and Deadpool MUST CRUSH How to be single??

I'm seeing both Zoolander 2 and DP (prolly in the same night). I hope both movies make $40 million each opening weekend and that shitty movie How To Be Single dies making only $10 total. Rebel Wilson isn't funny and the other girl is just annoyingly meek and stupid.

You realize this is the second year in a row that Dokota Johnson stars in a crappy movie, directed at female audiences, opening on valentines day against a fun R-Rated comic book film that is obviously a labor of love for it's makers.
