There’s no use in ranting and raving, it was bound to happen. As I’m sure CARRIE, CHRISTINE, CUJO and the whole lot will soon follow. Might as well accept it now right? Now lots of King’s adaptations could still stand strong today but if I had to pick a strongest, it would be PET SEMATARY. Personally I’ve kind of got a history with PET SEMATARY where-as it’s the only flick I remember from my childhood that I remember actually scaring me. I straight had to leave the house while watching that flick. I’m sure I’m not the only one either.
So alas we come to the inevitable wall. PET SEMATARY is being remade. Apparently this is old news? Well sh*t it’s brand new to me! I have no idea how this slipped under my radar but according to The Hollywood Reporter the project was once at Alphaville with a script from FACE/OFF scribes Mike Werb and Michael Colleary and the dashing Seth Gecko circling! I mean George Clooney…
Anyway that’s all out the window! And according to The Reporter the PET SEMATARY remake is now at Paramount and they’ve gone ahead and tapped Matthew Greenberg to pen the script. Why Greenberg? Well the man is no stranger to Stephen King adaptations, having penned 2007’s 1408. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Steven Schneider are producing.
Alright. I loved 1408. I know there’s people out there that have their gripe with it, good for you. I feel it was one of the better PG-13 genre flicks to come out in the past few years… And folks that is one small group. Does Greenberg’s attachment to PET SEMATARY entice me? Not at all. As I’m sure it won’t for many of you as well. PET SEMATARY is just one of those flicks you should never touch…
Though I suppose it could actually turn out pretty good? Hell the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake isn’t looking half bad and that shite was tragic when announced, right? Perhaps. In case you’re new to the party here’s PET SEMATARY’s synopsis:
Published in 1983, King’s creeper tale centered on a family that trades the city life for the country life in Maine, then discovers that they have moved near a pet cemetery that rests on an ancient burial ground. When the husband’s toddler son is killed in an auto accident, the father takes the boy’s body to the cemetery, where it is resurrected in demonic form.
