1883: Yellowstone prequel series is a one and done limited show according to EP Taylor Sheridan

Fans of the Yellowstone prequel series 1883 are going to be in for a bit of a shock with this latest bit of news. According to series creator and executive producer Taylor Sheridan, 1883 was basically a one-and-done limited series that will most likely not get a season two.

During a chat with Deadline, Sheridan said, “I created this peek through time to show you this one specific journey. I’m not someone who likes to tie everything up in a bow and explain how everyone lived happily ever after or didn’t.” Sheridan then went on to add, “On to the next peek through the window.” This is a reference to the recently announced Yellowstone prequel spinoff, 1932. That show will move ahead several decades and follow the Dutton family during the Great Depression.

Sheridan wrapped up his comments with a statement that made it seem clear that 1883 was a contained story with a limited run. Sheridan said, “For me, as a storyteller, it feels close-ended. I’m going to peek through the window of a different era and see what I see then.”

Lending more credence to the likelihood that 1883 is not getting a Season 2 came during ViacomCBS’ Investors’ Day presentation in February. Paramount+ cryptically teased that there’d be “more” of the hit spinoff with the order of additional episodes for its first season, but stopped short of officially ordering a season 2.

Created by Academy Award nominee Taylor Sheridan, 1883 follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land – Montana. The series stars Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Billy Bob Thornton, Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Audie Rick, Marc Rissmann, Eric Nelsen, and James Landry Hebert.
