I wish I liked After Dark’s annual Horrorfest more than I do, because it’s a wonderful idea in theory. But the execution has been subpar – good luck finding many people outside of our horror-loving circles who even know what the thing is. Even trickier would be getting them interested… Part of the problem, in my opinion, is the refusal to roll it out in October. I know that the powers that be don’t want to tangle with the SAW movies (I’ve heard so much declared in person) but there’s just no appeal in November (which is when it has been shown the last two years) or in January, when it will debut in ’09. The films are problematic too, as they really get no suitable advertising, and the whole experience just seems like a big jumble. (Of course, some of the films aren’t very good to begin with. Many of them, actually.)
But on it trots because it does decently on DVD, so I’m here to tell you about two of the newly announced flicks for the latest edition of 8 FILMS TO DIE FOR. DYING BREED and AUTOPSY (from MOTHER OF TEARS scribe Adam Gierasch) have been added to the list, which already includes The Broken, Slaughter, Perkins’ 14, The Butterfly Effect: Revelation and From Within (read my review of that HERE). The Horrorfest runs from January 9th to the 15th.
Here’s DYING BREED‘s plot: A Zoology student, her partner, and her partner’s friend get lost in the vast forests of Tasmania and are subsequently hunted by a breed of mutants with a taste for human flesh who also are direct descendants of the murderous cannibal Alexander Pearce (aka “The Pieman”).
Here’s AUTOPSY’s: A young woman tries to find her injured boyfriend in a bizarre and dangerous hospital.
There’s only one more flick to be added, and you know we’ll give you the heads-up when it’s announced. To learn more about this event, check out the Official Site!
Autopsy’s Ashley Schneider… Don’t ask…
