The Hollywood Reporter now has it that Stuart Beattie (who wrote 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, DERAILED, COLLATERAL) has been tapped by Lakeshore Entertainment to write and direct I, FRANKENSTEIN…with a shoot eyed for this coming fall.
Now, this is an interesting announcement considering Lakeshore had writer Kevin Grevioux and director Patrick Tatopoulos attached to the project over a year ago. Wonder what happened in the interim to change their minds…
Anyway, back to Beattie. The dude’s clearly a hot commodity script wise, having penned such high profile outings as G.I. JOE: RISE OF COBRA, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES and the upcoming HALO adaptation. Directorially, Beattie made TOMORROW, WHEN THE WAR BEGAN last year…which shattered box-office records in Beattie’s native Australia. He’s currently “announced” to sequelize that film, doing so from his own screenplay.
While I can’t say I favor either Beattie or Grevioux/Tatopoulos, I do think having one writer/director can only prove beneficial. It’s hard enough to direct your own script, much less someone else’s.
