8-Bit Christmas trailer presents a Nintendo-themed holiday adventure

Those you who grew up in the ’80s as I did, you might want to brace yourselves because HBO Max‘s 8-Bit Christmas trailer is about to send you packing on a trip down memory lane. Who else remembers the days when a friend or neighbor had the Nintendo Entertainment System before you did? My source of NES goodness before I got my console was a lanky stoner named Mike, and even though he was several years my senior, he was always cool about me coming over to monopolize his game time. Ah, there I go down memory lane. Do you see how easily it can happen?

As I was saying, HBO Max unwrapped an 8-Bit Christmas trailer and images on Thursday. Directed by Michael Dowse (Goon, Stuber), 8-Bit Christmas is a humorous and heartfelt look back at the adventures of childhood. Set in suburban Chicago in the late 1980s, the story centers on ten-year-old Jake Doyle’s herculean quest to get the latest and greatest video game system for Christmas.

8-Bit Christmas stars Neil Patrick Harris as the Adult Jake Doyle with Winslow Fegley playing his ten-year-old counterpart. June Diane Raphael, Steve Zahn, Cyrus Arnold, and Sophia Reid-Gantzert also star. Kevin Jakubowski wrote the script, which is based on his 2013 novel of the same name.

In addition to dropping an 8-Bit Christmas trailer online, HBO Max also debuted several stills and a poster from the upcoming film:

How did you go about procuring your own Nintendo Entertainment System back in the day? What were some of the first games you bought for the system? Does 8-Bit Christmas look like something you’ll be checking out this holiday season? Let us know in the comments section below.
