It’s Starfleet vs. Klingons in latest Star Trek: Discovery promos

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

After so many delays, it feels a little strange that we're now less than a month away from the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery. The upcoming series stars Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead) as Michael Burnham, a brilliant Starfleet first-officer, as well as the first human educated on Vulcan, who's forced to make an impossibly difficult decision which impacts the entire Federation. Reaction to what we've seen of Star Trek: Discovery has been quite mixed, with some taking issue with the apparent disregard for what has come before in terms of sets, costumes, and makeup; remember, Discovery takes place just ten years before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. I'd be lying if I said that I didn't have concerns about the series, but I know damn well that I'll be glued to the TV when it premieres.

We've been seeing much more promotional material for Star Trek: Discovery lately, and the latest promos for the series highlight the differences between Starfleet and the Klingons, who seem destined for war.

It's becoming clear that Star Trek: Discovery will be dealing with a Klingon conflict, but executive producer Alex Kurtzman recently said that although a Klingon war will be the major plot arc of the first season, it may not continue beyond the first year. Instead, the second season of Star Trek: Discovery would deal with the aftermath of the war, as well as new stories.

Each season needs to be about a different thing. I wouldn't necessarily want to bring the Klingon War into season two. However, the results of the war are going to allow for a lot of new storytelling that will be the result of everything that happens and the people that are left behind; the casualties, the things that have grown in Starfleet as a result of the war. That's what we'll inherit in the second season.

Star Trek: Discovery will debut on CBS on September 24, 2017 before moving to CBS All Access.
