Lana Wachowski on Jupiter Ascending: “It’s a science-fiction space opera”

Films by the Wachowski siblings have divided many movie fans (besides the first MATRIX), and their upcoming film JUPITER ASCENDING will probably also have some fans who love it, and others that outright hate it. I've always been a fan of the two imaginative directors, and JUPITER ASCENDING looks like it could be as polarizing as their previous films.

Lana Wachowski was recently interviewed, and talked a little about her upcoming film. She describes it as a "science-fiction space opera," and says like other films by her and her brother, it will be a mashup of multiple genres.

"It's a science-fiction space opera. It has a lot of things from a lot of genres that we love. It's got a lot of original action, it's got a lot of romance."

Are the Wachowski siblings capable of making "small" movies? Lana thinks they are, but she says for some reason their films always tend to get a little bigger than how they originally imagined it.

"We seem not to be very good at making small things. We keep saying 'Let's go make a small movie.' But then they always end up being enormously complex. We want to somehow always find something that is different or that no one has tried."

Although both of their last films were box office flops (SPEED RACER and CLOUD ATLAS), Lana Wachowski says she's glad that some fans really enjoy those movies, and appreciates their love for her and her brother's films.

"People come up to us and just break into tears talking about ('Cloud Atlas'). Even 'Speed Racer,' we get people that come up and say it was their favorite movie of all time. We've been very lucky that way. We have great fans. … And we keep trying to keep surprising them."

What can we expect from JUPITER ASCENDING visually? Andy Wachowski wouldn't go into details, but did say the visual effects for the film are "way more complicated" than those in CLOUD ATLAS, and considering some of the shots in that film, I can't even imagine what they'll be doing for JUPITER ASCENDING.

I'm not going to lie, I am incredibly pumped for JUPITER ASCENDING. I've always had a soft spot for original sci-fi (even those that are original, but borrow heavily from other films…*cough* OBLIVION *cough*), and I can't wait to see what the Wachowski siblings have in store for us with their science-fiction space opera.

JUPITER ASCENDING stars Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, James D'Arcy and Tim Pigott-Smith, and will be released on July 25th, 2014.
