Looks like Steven Spielberg has been playing chess! First, he was instrumental in helping guide J.J. Abrams to the director’s seat for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII and now he has nabbed another hot director to take over the JURASSIC PARK franchise. Deadline is reporting that Colin Trevorrow, once linked himself to EPISODE VII, will be directing JURASSIC PARK 4.
JURASSIC PARK 4 is coming from a script by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver who brought us the excellent RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. Spielberg and Frank Marshall will produce via Universal. The film already had announced a June 13, 2014 release date, which still seems to be the target. Plot details are still secret, so we have no way of knowing if those dino-human hybrids are actually going to happen.
Back during the STAR WARS directing carousel, Trevorrow was rumored to have been meeting with executives about the role. Seeing as Kathleen Kennedy was producing JURASSIC PARK 4 and is now head of Lucasfilm, that may have led to the confusion. But this does confirm Trevorrow’s comments at the time:
“To clarify, there is another film we all love that I’m currently trying not to mess up. Odds I will direct Episode VII: 3720 to 1.”
Trevorrow was apparently a big fan of the series and had his heart in the right place. Having seen SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED, I cannot vouch for his ability to direct large scale, effects heavy action, but the guy is a skilled director with lots of upside. Hopefully this all works out for the best.
