David R. Ellis, director of the infamous Samuel L. Jackson movie SNAKES ON A PLANE, died today at the age of 60. While not a recognizable name to all, Ellis was a consistent figure in Hollywood, having directed the movies HOMEWARD BOUND II, FINAL DESTINATION 2, CELLULAR, ASYLUM, THE FINAL DESTINATION, and most recently SHARK NIGHT 3D. Ellis also worked as a second unit director on major studio films such as HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCEROR’S STONE, THE MATRIX RELOADED, MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD, and the upcoming films R.I.P.D., 47 RONIN, and WINTER’S TALE.

Aside from his extensive work behind the camera, Ellis also was an accomplished stunt performer having worked in 75 different movies, including MISERY, PATRIOT GAMES, LETHAL WEAPON, TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A., SCARFACE, and many more. With such a varied career, he will certainly be remembered by many in Hollywood.

Ellis was in South Africa for pre-production on the adaptation of the manga KITE which was to feature Samuel L. Jackson. No cause of death has been released. With his various projects in the works, including 4 other films in pre-production, it remains to be seen what will happen. First and foremost, our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
