Stanley Kubrick personally wrote or adapted the majority of the films he directed, but a person can only do so much in a single lifetime. And for every script of Kubrick’s that was turned into a feature film, there was another that necessity left by the wayside. Seeking to remedy this travesty, eOne Television International (HELL ON WHEELS, ROOKIE BLUE) has secured the rights to produce two of Kubrick’s thus-far untouched scripts: one a Civil War-based war film titled DOWNSLOPE, the other a (true) heist film of sorts titled GOD FEARING MAN.
There is no word yet as to what form these productions will take insofar as miniseries vs “film for television” goes, but with Kubrick’s name attached you can bet that the end result will be substantial either way. Stay tuned (so to speak) for further details regarding this fascinating pair of projects.

DOWNSLOPE is based on the true story by Civil War historian Shelby Foote and revolves around Confederate Army Col. John Mosby and his plot to settle the score after Union Gen. George Custer captures and hangs several of his men.
GOD FEARING MAN will be adapted for television by British screenwriter Stephen R. Clark and tell the true story of Canadian minister Herbert Emerson Wilson, who went on to become one of the best safe-crackers and most successful American bank robbers in the early 20th century.
To which of these two are you more looking forward? My vote definitely goes to DOWNSLOPE – the Civil War as seen through Kubrick’s eyes would be the kind of grimly spectacular yet harrowingly personal film I’ve been hoping for in a Civil War-related film.
