UPDATE – The Academy has confirmed that Billy Crystal will host the 2012 Oscars. Talks with Crystal reportedly began almost immediately after Eddie Murphy backed out following the resignation of producer Brett Ratner.

Billy Crystal has revealed on twitter that he’ll be hosting the Oscars. It’s been one helluva week for the Academy, which scrambled to find another host and production team in the wake of scandals.
But is it just a joke? The Academy hasn’t made an official announcement just yet, and Crystal is known for being a smartass.
More as we hear it. This would make for the ninth time that Crystal has hosted the ceremony. It’s the easy choice but would it be a good one?
