Remake It So: The Bodyguard, Soapdish and Hello Ghost get updates

Perhaps better known for selling soundtracks and not quite launching pop singer/narcotics fan Whitney Houston to A-list movie star, THE BODYGUARD featured Kevin Costner as an ex-Secret Service agent tasked with protecting a famous pop singer from a stalker.

And now Deadline says the 1992 movie is getting remade by Warner Bros., producer Dan Lin (SHERLOCK HOLMES) and Black List screenwriters Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer. This time around it’s an Iraq War veteran as the hired hero who “discovers that the world of Twitter, Google Maps and TMZ has made access to celebrities easier than ever, making the job more difficult than ever.” We should probably expect to see something like Taylor Lautner protecting Rihanna this time around.

Paramount is also revisiting the 90s with a new version of the ensemble comedy SOAPDISH, according to THR. The original 1991 farce took place behind the scenes of a daytime TV soap opera and featured Kevin Kline, Robert Downey Jr., Elisabeth Shue, Teri Hatcher, Sally Field and Whoopi Goldberg. The new one’s being developed by actor-writer Ben Schwartz (“Parks and Recreations”, “Robot Chicken”), with Rob Reiner producing.

Meanwhile, Deadline reports that director Chris Columbus (HOME ALONE, HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE) wants to do an Americanized remake of the recent Korean hit HELLO GHOST, a comedy-drama about a man who tries to kill himself and subsequently sees spirits who he must assist to the afterlife.

Columbus’ last movie was PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS. Let’s hope his HELLO GHOST special effects don’t look quite as ridiculous.
