For years, fans of Valve’s HALF-LIFE videogames have wanted to see scientist Gordon Freeman get the Hollywood treatment.
But getting it right is the exact reason we haven’t seen it yet. As Valve honcho Gabe Newell tells PC Gamer, after the first acclaimed game was released, “There was a whole bunch of meetings with people from Hollywood. Directors down there wanted to make a Half-Life movie and stuff, so they’d bring in a writer or some talent agency would bring in writers, and they would pitch us on their story. And their stories were just so bad. I mean, brutally, the worst. Not understanding what made the game a good game, or what made the property an interesting thing for people to be a fan of.“
Newell goes on to imply that if a HALF-LIFE movie happens, they’ll do it their own damn selves: “That’s when we started saying ‘Wow, the best thing we could ever do is to just not do this as a movie, or we’d have to make it ourselves.’ And I was like, ‘Make it ourselves? Well that’s impossible.’ But the Team Fortress 2 thing, the Meet The Team shorts, is us trying to explore that.“

The first HALF-LIFE game finds theoretical physicist Gordon Freeman trying to escape the top secret Black Mesa facility after an experiment tears the fabric of reality and the denizens of an alien dimension begin visiting ours. HALF-LIFE 2 jumps ahead several years to a dystopian future where society has been overcome by the extradimensional empire called The Combine, and Freeman joins an underground resistance movement to fight them.
