When your new movies open to shaky box office and less than generous reviews, perhaps it’s time to resuscitate an older, familiar movie and blast it down the runway?
That’s possibly in the cards for producer Jerry Bruckheimer and former hotshot pilot Tom Cruise. The Brucks tells MTV that the long-discussed TOP GUN sequel might be getting some fuel: “We tried to develop [a sequel] and we couldn’t do it — I was with my partner Don Simpson. And then Tom took it over and he tried to develop something and it never quite happened.”
“We were recently approached again to start talking about it but, you know, nothing yet. We kicked around some ideas because the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago. So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it.“
Cruise is currently planning a fourth MISSION IMPOSSIBLE movie and a return as TROPIC THUNDER’s aggressive producer Les Grossman, but coasting on nostalgia instead of (withering?) charm might launch him back toward the top at Mach 4. And despite the occasional hiccup (although PRINCE OF PERSIA’s global receipts are fine), Bruckheimer is king of the summer tentpole.
But is TOP GUN beloved for its quality or its cheese factor? Would a TOP GUN follow-up sizzle like the original (made in the days before CG onslaught)? Would there be room for the current incarnation of Val Kilmer? And more importantly, would the sequel feature Goose’s ghost?
