There’s something one of a kind about John Hughes. Something that not just anyone in Hollywood has, spirit. That’s why it makes me sad to say that today John Hughes died of a heart attack at age 59 while with his family in New York City.
Hughes created films that were timeless. Films that everyone could relate to. Films that we keep close to us. Any fan of Hughes, or even someone who’s only seen just one of his movies knew how culturally influential he was, or just plain influential.
Starting with the classic SIXTEEN CANDLES, Hughes knew what it was like to be a teenager. All the drama, angst, happiness, fun, imagination, and the rest of the rollercoaster that drove those years. Hughes didn’t just make a movie, he created an experience. You could see yourself as any of his characters, and you wanted to be those characters. How many of us wanted to be as rebellious as John Bender, to be in love with Molly Ringwald, help Wyatt and Gary create Lisa, jump on a float with Ferris, go on vacation with Clark Griswold, watch Josie ride a mechanical pony? The list goes on.
Whether Hughes was writing, directing or producing each of his movies had that special touch. When you watched any of his films by the end they almost felt like magic. Each always had more than one incredible scene, whether it was VACATION, THE BREAKFAST CLUB, PRETTY IN PINK, FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF, PLANES, TRAINS, & AUTOMOBILES, UNCLE BUCK, HOME ALONE, CURLY SUE, BEETHOVEN, or of the rest of his amazing films. They always seemed to be so perfect with the music, dialogue, and atmosphere.
There will never be another John Hughes. There will never be movies that are made that make people feel the they way his did. Our hearts go out to his family at this time and the fans who loved him dearly. We will always remember the moments that will last past our lifetime, and possibly further. These are the moments that we could share with our family and friends, and that brought us closer together.
So whether you were a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess or a criminal, you will always remember the films and legend that is John Hughes.
