There’s been a lot of talk about an adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s book ‘Survivor’, but it seemed like the project might have died out due to the plot baring several similarities to what happened on September 11th. Now though, director Francis Lawrence (I AM LEGEND) has told Collider that he is in fact working on bringing it to the screen: “Well, there’s a couple of things I’m working on. I’m working on a book “Survivor” by Chuck Palahniuk that I’m working on with a friend. It’s a great book. I love that book. So we’ve been working on that.” Coming right on the back of that first still from CHOKE, this is a pretty good time to be a fan of Palahniuk’s work. I’ve heard people say that Survivor is even better than FIGHT CLUB and I don’t know if I’m just being stubborn, but I disagree. It’s a wonderful book, don’t get me wrong, but I think that FIGHT CLUB is both a better book and an easier translation to film. Plus, what are the chances of this film getting two people as perfect or as cool as Ed Norton and Brad Pitt?
Here’s how Wikipedia sums up the plot: A satire of commercial culture, it is the story of Tender Branson, a member of the Creedish Church, a death cult. In it, every member learns how to be a servant for the human race—most of them are butlers and maids—and fear most human pleasures. They await a sign from God to tell them to deliver themselves unto Him, that is, commit suicide. The sign finally comes, and a good ten years later, Tender becomes the last surviving member of the cult. He’s thrown into mainstream culture and becomes a personal icon for many people.
